  1. Charlotte, NC – June 7, 2010 – Business owners Michael Torcellini and Nick Smith have announced they are opening the doors of Monkey Joe’s to bring some much needed fun and joy to the lives of Charlotte’s autistic children and their families.

According to the Autism Society of America, one in every 150 children is diagnosed with the fastest growing developmental disease — Autism. The disease not only effects the child, but family and friends as well by adding strains to marriage, other children, work, finances and personal relationships and responsibilities. The social and communicational aspects of the disease may make everyday life, including school and play, harder for these children.

“When we realized the magnitude of what these families went through in their daily life, we just knew we needed to reach out and find a way to bring some relief and much needed fun and joy into their lives,” said owner and general partner, Michael Torcellini. “Sometimes playtimes are the only time these families venture out.”

“Most kids with autism are constantly dealing with sensory issues and often resolve these needs by spinning and bouncing. Monkey Joe’s is the perfect place for that,” said Nancy Nestor, President of the Mecklenburg County Chapter of the Autism Society. Unfortunately, many of our kids have difficulty in large groups as the echoing noises cause sensory overload. By having the playtime at Monkey Joe’s, after hours, it is perfect for our kids.”

Special Needs Night will be held every fourth Wednesday of the month from 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at all four Charlotte Monkey Joe locations.
All parents of kids with special needs are invited to stop by for this private playtime.
